FREQUENTLY ASK QUESTIONS ABOUT ACUPUNCTURE
Acupuncture is an ancient, holistic form of medicine that provides relief from a wide range of medical conditions. Its philosophy is based on the Daoist tradition, which dates back over 8,000 years. It is also one of our primary care services for clients who need to heal their bodies and are open to alternative means.
If you're interested in this service, here are our answers to some of the most frequently asked acupuncture questions.
Do acupuncture needles hurt?
No, the needles are not painful. Most people feel nothing at all when needles are inserted. Some feel a slight pinch, while others wonder, "Is it in yet?" Acupuncture needles are solid, flexible, and extremely thin (about the width of two hairs).
Certain sensations are linked to the therapeutic effects of acupuncture. These symptoms may include mild cramping, heaviness, distention, tingling, or an electric sensation as they travel along a meridian. If there is any discomfort, it is usually mild and only temporary.
Is acupuncture safe?
Acupuncture is widely regarded as one of the most risk-free forms of medicine. Acupuncture needles are individually packaged, pre-sterilized, and disposable. Acupuncturists receive extensive training and are regulated by the medical boards of their respective states.
One of the most significant advantages of acupuncture is that it has almost no side effects. The site of an acupuncture needle may occasionally develop a small, temporary bruise. Compared to the laundry list of questions and side effects associated with the average pharmaceutical drug,
acupuncture is an extremely low risk!
How frequently must I visit for treatment?
Your medical condition determines the frequency of your treatment. One advantage of the payment sliding scale is that it allows patients to come in frequently, often twice or thrice per week.
Numerous conditions respond more quickly to frequent acupuncture treatments, while others only require a weekly visit. You won't need to come in as frequently once your condition has stabilized. When you come in for your first treatment, we will personalize a treatment plan specifically for you.
How does acupuncture work?
According to Chinese medical theory, acupuncture works by balancing the body's Qi. Qi is a type of bioenergy that runs along meridians. When Qi gets blocked, it shows as an imbalance or illness. If you have a health condition, it means that some part of your body's system is out of whack. Chinese medical theory enables us to identify and correct imbalances.
According to Western medical theory, acupuncture appears to work by stimulating parts of the brain. It also causes the body to produce natural biomolecules like neurotransmitters, vasodilators, and hormones. The exact mechanisms causing this are unknown, but the effects are observable.
How much time should I rest with the needles in?
When people first come in, they are unsure how long they should stay and rest with the needles. We frequently advise our patients to stay for at least 30 minutes to allow the treatment to take effect.
Resting with the needles for a longer period of time does not necessarily mean a better
treatment or greater benefit from the treatment. If you are in a resting state, feel free to stay as long as you want. When the body is resting, it heals the best.
It won't help you stay longer if your mind is wandering and you aren't restful. The best thing you can do is to pay attention to your body.
How do I get started with acupuncture?
Begin by asking your doctor if acupuncture is appropriate for you, your specific condition, and your return-to-activity goals. Acupuncture is a safe and effective way to treat various pain conditions. Acupuncture may be a viable option if meds have been a problem for you.
