Car accidents frequently result in pain, aches, and injuries. Muscles and ligaments are typically injured following a car accident, regardless of the intensity of the impact or the period of time the accident occurred. Following an accident, drivers and passengers may experience various painful or disabling symptoms.
Pain, stiffness, and other injuries from a car accident may not appear for days, weeks, or even months after the accident. They may also pursue you later in life if left untreated, causing chronic pain or disability that is more difficult to treat.
Following a car accident, acupuncture can be incredibly beneficial to your rehabilitation. Acupuncture is a natural pain reliever that aids in the reduction of muscle spasms, scar tissue formation, anxiety, and general chronic pain. It can also help improve your flexibility and mobility while reducing the time it takes to recover from injuries.
The sooner you seek
acupuncture for car accident injuries, the better your chances of recovery.
At Komp Chiropractic and Acupuncture Clinic, we've gathered information and resources to help you understand how research supports acupuncture's ability to treat the most common aches, pains, and symptoms patients experience after a car accident.
Back Pain
Acupuncture's ability to relieve back pain, particularly chronic low back pain, is well supported by research. According to one study, 60 percent of patients who received acupuncture for low back pain reported significant improvement, compared to 39 percent of those who did not receive acupuncture treatment.
Kaiser Permanente study discovered that "acupuncture was more effective than usual care alone in helping individuals with chronic low back pain feel less bothered by their symptoms and function better in their daily activities."
Another study concluded that "...acupuncture, either alone or in combination with other interventions, has been demonstrated as an effective clinical option for patients with chronic LBP [low back pain] and should be advocated in routine clinical practice."
Acupuncture, electroacupuncture, cupping, and other East Asian medicine modalities can often help relieve or resolve low back pain, particularly if it is the result of an injury sustained in a car accident.
Headaches & Migraines
Acupuncture can relieve headaches and migraines without relying on pharmaceuticals, which are frequently prescribed for these conditions. An increasing body of evidence indicates that acupuncture can treat migraines and headaches with clinically significant efficacy.
According to one 2020 study, "compared with medication, acupuncture therapy is relatively low-cost and has fewer side effects..." than medications, and "acupuncture demonstrably attenuates and prevents migraine."
Another study with nearly 5,000 participants discovered that "...headache frequency was at least halved in 41% of participants receiving acupuncture."
An article by Dr. Albrecht Molsberger best summed up the efficacy of acupuncture in treating migraines and headaches. "Based on the current evidence, acupuncture should be considered as a first-line treatment option for migraine, supplementing other non-pharmacologic treatment options," he says. It is at least as effective as prophylactic drug therapy, has longer lasting effects, is safe, appears cost-effective, and reduces drug intake with potentially severe side effects."
Neck Pain & Whiplash
Car accidents frequently result in neck pain, strains, sprains, and whiplash. Approximately 80 percent of people in car accidents experience whiplash due to the accident. Acupuncture can be a highly effective and safe treatment for these conditions.
In a 2015 study, researchers discovered that 70 percent of participants reported short-term relief from neck pain after completing a full course of acupuncture treatment, whereas only 40 percent reported similar relief after taking pain medication.
According to the same study, 87 percent of participants treated with acupuncture experienced long-term pain and symptom relief, compared to 68% of participants treated with medication.
Another study, reported by NPR, discovered that after three months of treatment, people with chronic neck pain reported 10% less pain than those without.
In Summary
Acupuncture can be used to treat pain naturally. Research shows significant benefits in treating back pain, headaches and migraines, neck pain and whiplash, and other conditions common after a car accident.
